Homemade Hummus

(4 servings)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup chick peas (garbanzo beans)
  • 1 1/2 TBS tahini (sesame butter)
  • 2 TBS fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tsp. raw garlic, minced (about 1 clove)
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp fresh cracked pepper
  • 2 tsp. olive oil
How To Prepare:

Get your food processor out for this one!

For this recipe, you can either use fresh chick peas (or garbanzo beans) or you can use the canned variety (if you opt for canned, make sure they are low in sodium and organic!).

In the food processor, puree soaked chick peas through olive oil until the mixture has reached a smoothe, creamy consistency. If the hummus looks too thick, add more olive oil a little at a time.

Some fun additions to this recipe are: Any kind of roasted veggie such as peppers, onion, garlic, eggplant, or zucchini!

Naturopathic Doctor Says:

A wonderful middle-eastern treat, hummus is chiefly made of chick-peas (garbanzo beans), which are a nice source of molybdenum, a nutrient that can help lower reaction to the food additive sulfite, which creates an allergic reaction to wine. Chick peas are a great source of protein and fiber, thus making them a good choice for people looking to balance blood sugar. Tahini is made from ground sesame seeds, and is viewed in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a food to gently nourish the blood, and strengthen the liver and kidneys.
